Overlaying the Phase Diagram on your Excel data plot. All manipulation is done in Excel. 1. Access the NIST website and download the phase diagram to your computer. 2. Note the end points of the axes. 3. Generate a table of cooling curve inflection point data (same column format as summary files). 4. Produce a scatter plot of your data. 5. Adjust the axes limits to match those of the downloaded phase diagram. 6. Set major gridlines. Suggestion: X: 10, Y: 50. 7. Set minor tick-marks if desired. 8. Enter titles for the plot and axes. 9. Format the data point appearance. 10. Insert Picture from File - Downloaded diagram. 11. Display the Picture Toolbar. 12. Use the rectangular marquee tool to isolate the grid - no titles, no axes labels or numbers. 13. Cut or Crop the picture. (May be version dependent.) 14. From the Picture Toolbar, choose Transparent Color. Click on the background to make it transparent. 15. If the background is transparent, go to Step 20. 16. Save the picture as a jpeg or bitmap. (Some versions may require bitmap format for the transparency step.) 17. Delete the original picture from Excel. 18. Insert the new edited picture. 19. From the Picture Toolbar, choose Transparent Color. Click on the background to make it transparent. 20. Select Format Picture - Size. UNLOCK aspect ratio. 21. Adjust the picture to overlay the data plot.
